We&#8217;ve had excellent talks by a very wide range of speakers; we&#8217;ve had sell-out audiences at our events; and we&#8217;ve welcomed our <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/10\/12\/the-csmch-announces-its-first-postdoctoral-fellow\/\">inaugural CSMCH-IASH visiting postdoctoral fellow<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a quick round-up of some of the highlights, with links to all the relevant blog posts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We started the year with an exciting event on &#8216;truth and democracy&#8217;, with three distinguished speakers, and a spirited exchange during the question and answer session. You can read about &#8211; and listen again to &#8211; all three short interventions <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/09\/20\/summary-and-podcasts-from-our-inaugural-roundtable\/\">here<\/a>. This opening event was followed by a series of excellent talks throughout the semester on, amongst other things, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/09\/29\/vincent-tiberj-discusses-generational-change-in-politics\/\">generational change in French politics<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/10\/05\/malte-rolf-soviet-modernity\/\">Soviet visions of modernity<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/11\/01\/esra-ozyurek-on-muslims-the-nazi-past-and-the-german-national-character\/\">Muslims and Holocaust memory in contemporary Germany<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/11\/15\/jake-blanc-rural-democracy-brazil\/\">dam protests in 1980s Brazil<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/11\/29\/politics-geography-south-asia\/\">the politics and geography of South Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-159\" src=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/11\/IMG_2290-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/11\/IMG_2290-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/11\/IMG_2290-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/11\/IMG_2290-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/11\/IMG_2290-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jake Blanc captures the audience&#8217;s attention during the Q&amp;A session for his talk in November.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Centre also co-sponsored an excellent workshop on the <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/09\/22\/writing-the-troubles\/\">Northern Irish &#8216;Troubles&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0in September and a roundtable on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eTNtVFm3ROw\">academic freedom in Uganda, Bangladesh, Turkey and China<\/a>\u00a0in December.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we&#8217;ve had a number of fascinating guest contributions on the blog about everything from the <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/10\/15\/rise-and-fall-of-the-postcard-a-history-of-visual-culture-in-modern-tourism\/\">history of the postcard<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/research.shca.ed.ac.uk\/csmch\/2017\/11\/07\/lighting-the-way-harold-macmillan-and-the-audacity-of-balance\/\">Harold Macmillan&#8217;s &#8216;Middle Way&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s a lot more to come. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/history-classics-archaeology\/modern-contemporary-history-centre\/events-and-seminars\/seminar-series\">Next semester&#8217;s programme<\/a> is bursting with exciting events, including talks by Aditya Sarkar, Peter Jackson and Rana Mitter on India, Europe and China respectively; a Czech New Wave film screening series in February; and a workshop on democratic politics in Africa in early March.
